LO2. Be able to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based on a given brief

Contents of a proposal

I have created a Power Point that I will use to pitch my product to A-Line Productions. The main things I need to say are:

Executive Summary:

My idea is to create a horror film magazine, specialising in witchcraft, the paranormal and supernatural. My magazine would explore a niche in the market and stand out from the competitors as only mine would focus on these specific sub genres, whereas other rivals such as Fangoria and Horror Hound focus on all aspects of horror.

Unique Selling Point and Target Audience

What makes Occult stand out from rival magazines and different is the fact it is the first of its kind; no other horror magazine focuses on witchcraft, the paranormal and supernatural. It also looks at fashion within horror movies, which would appeal to people who are just fans of fashion and not just horror movie fans.

As well as this, the magazine is quite cheap for how much is inside. It markets for £4.99, which is affordable considering the age and social demographic it is aimed at. As well as this, it is seasonal, so if someone couldn’t afford it regularly, this gives them time to save money.

Generally, Occult is aimed towards lower/middle class men aged 15-50, so it is important to include content and present my magazine in a way which is appealing to this grouping, as well as readers out of this grouping.

Something we need to also consider is, because it is a magazine generally on witchcraft, this may actually appeal more towards women, so we would need to include content to also satisfy their needs. Basing off of gender stereotypes, the typical ‘girly’ woman may be interested on the fashion included.

Generally, the social demographic is C1, C2, D and E, so it is important the magazine is affordable.

Product Description

The same content will be featured in both the digital version and printed version, however there will be content exclusive to each version.

Both versions will feature interviews, articles, and reviews about must-see horror movies.

Occult will feature big, Hollywood movies and actors, which will attract viewers, however it will also include lesser known movies.

There will also be factual articles, like ‘22 Things You Didn’t Know About…’

In both the digital and printed version, there will be lots of content about fashion as seen in movies and the styles of different actors. As many horror movies about witchcraft have dark, edgy clothing, this may attract the ‘emo’ and ‘gothic’ subcultures.

The magazine will include, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram updates from auteurs, directors and actors all affiliated with the horror genre.

Autumn editions will be special edition. With Halloween in the Fall, this will be an opportunity to increase the pagination and circulation.

In the printed and digital versions, there will be different advertisements to interest the readers, and information about horror events in the UK, such as HorrorCon and WitchFest, Fright Fest.

There will also be news and gossip within the horror genre, but it will be limited to the stuff it reports on to avoid becoming a tabloid magazine.

Budget

Until Occult increases in circulation and makes a name for itself, it is expected to lose money in the first few years, however will make up for this and profit later on.

Estimating the figures and prices, I have found out that the magazine will lose money within the first few years, however jumping to the fifth year, the magazine will begin to profit.

On a budget of £2 million, which includes distribution and advertising costs, we will lose £801,600 in the first year

Skipping to the 5th year however, still on a budget of £2 million, we will profit £1,992,800

Details of production company

A-Line Productions is a cross media conglomerate company that owns different subsidiaries. This means my product may expand quicker, as it may attract an audience who are fans of other brands owned by the company.

Concluding comment

To conclude, A Line Productions would benefit from Occult as it is original, unique, and the first of its kind. It would provide all readers with enjoyable content, and in the long run, would cause the company to profit.

I believe Occult has the potential to grow and become the best modern horror movie magazine.

What will visually make my magazine stand out to consumers is the Masthead. The name ‘Occult’ means “knowledge of the paranormal” and is often associated with witchcraft, which is why I chose this. The house style will be black, white, dark red and dark purple, as they are all ‘gothic’ colours which are also associated with the horror genre and witches. I will use a bold sans serif typeface for the masthead in white. The main colour on the cover will be black- which will make the text and main image on the cover stand out.

Here are just a few examples of colours I’ll use throughout the magazine – generally, these colours are considered dark and gothic.

In the printed copy, there will be stills and photos from movies and trailers, which will obviously be more appealing to the younger fans rather than older fans.

There will also be cut out coupons and discount codes for various retailers, selling horror related merchandise, clothing and other things.

(pause and wait for next slide)

Exclusive and interactive content such as videos and trailers will be available online. As well as this, there will be a forum to discuss things seen in each issue.

Cut-out coupons and posters will be available in the digital edition, however it will be the viewers choice to print them out if they want them.

My magazine will retail for £4.99, which I think is a reasonable price for this kind of magazine, and will be released seasonally, giving each issue plenty to cover and stop the magazines content from becoming repetitive and unoriginal. Yearly, 4 issues would usually cost £19.96; however, as a deal for people subscribed, the cost will be lowered to £18 for 4 printed issues and £15 for digital copies; more digital readers would save the expenses of having to print and transport the magazines to the shops it will be sold in, so digital copies will feature extra content to encourage more digital readers.

The magazine will not automatically be profitable, so before circulation and subscription increases, it will be sold in only big cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester and in specific stores like WHSmith, rather than every other supermarket.

Before publishing everything, I will need to go through all the necessary legal processes. One of the most important things is speaking to a legal adviser and making sure we are not publishing something that has already been published, as that could lead us into a lawsuit. We need to make sure the name hasn’t already been used, as well as style, fonts, design, and slogan.

Once we have done this, we will need to copyright everything used. This is so no one steals something from Occult, like the name or design. This ensures Occult will stay original and unique.

Thank you for listening, are there any client questions?

I have typed up some things to mention in my power point when presenting my pitch. I will turn them into flash cards to use in my pitch, to remind myself what I need to discuss.

Remember Jamie for a merit award you must consider what a client is going to ask you and be clear how you intend on amending your presentation based on these questions. At present I don’t feel you’ve considered client considerations.
